Canada Post alternatives for parcels
Updated Oct 29, 2026
Canada Post is the only carrier that reaches every Canadian address, and it holds the exclusive right to deliver letters. For parcels, though, there are plenty of alternatives, and labour disruptions in 2024 and 2025 pushed many small businesses to set them up. In a CFIB survey reported after the 2024 strike, 63% of businesses said they would leave Canada Post permanently if there were another one.
The alternatives, by type
National courier networks
Purolator, UPS, FedEx, Canpar and Loomis Express, and GLS Canada (formerly Dicom) run their own pickup and delivery networks. They are strongest for business addresses and heavier boxes, and they add surcharges for residential and remote delivery.
Regional and e-commerce delivery
Companies such as Intelcom/Dragonfly and Nationex focus on dense urban areas and e-commerce volume, especially in Quebec and Ontario. Coverage outside cities is thinner.
Consolidators
Chit Chats and Stallion Express collect parcels at drop-off points (including Montréal and Laval) and hand them to carriers in bulk, often with strong cross-border pricing. You ship under their account, so claims and adjustments go through them.
Shipping platforms
ShipStation, Freightcom, ShipTime, Lazr and others resell many carriers at negotiated rates through one account. They are the fastest way to get several alternatives at once. See every platform we track →
Switching quickly during a disruption
- Price your three most common box sizes with at least two non-postal carriers now, before you need to. The rate index shows typical prices by lane.
- Check residential and rural coverage for where your customers actually are; courier networks can cost much more there.
- Update your checkout shipping rates. Courier prices for small, light items can be several times the postal price.
- Keep tracking numbers flowing to customers. Every alternative above supports tracking.
