The cheapest way to ship a package in Canada
Updated Oct 29, 2026
There is no single cheapest carrier in Canada. The cheapest option changes with the box, the lane and the week, because each carrier weighs those factors differently. What you can do is compare the all-in price of the same shipment across every option, on the day you ship.
…
What sets the price
- Weight or size, whichever is greater. Carriers bill the higher of actual and dimensional weight. A big light box is priced like a heavy one. Check yours with the dimensional weight calculator.
- Distance and zone. Remote and northern postal codes cost more, and some services add a rural or extended-area surcharge.
- Speed. Ground and regular services are usually much cheaper than express, often for only a day or two of difference within Quebec and Ontario.
- Fuel surcharge. Every major carrier adds a fuel percentage that changes regularly. It is a real part of the price: on our panel it is often around a fifth of the base rate. We always show it separately.
- Which account you buy through. The counter price at a post office is the retail rate. Shipping platforms and small-business programs buy at negotiated rates, and the same label can cost much less through them.
How to compare fairly
- Compare the total before tax, not the advertised base rate. A low base with a high fuel surcharge isn’t cheap.
- Use the real dimensions of the packed box, rounded up.
- Check whether pickup is included or whether you need to drop off.
- Read the platform’s adjustment policy. If the carrier re-measures your box, some platforms add a fee on top of the correction. See why invoices differ from quotes.
Practical ways to pay less
- Right-size the box. Taking a few centimetres off each side can drop a parcel below the dimensional-weight threshold.
- For flat, light items, use a padded mailer and a small-packet service.
- For regular volume, compare platforms. They resell the same carriers at different prices, and the dearest option on a lane often costs a large fraction more than the cheapest. The shipping index tracks that gap daily.
